BOLO – Be On the Look Out – Skills to Respond

Corporate Course

  • Description

The onslaught of Covid 19 is an unprecedented time in world history. Many are coping as best as they can in the midst of many other life issues they already have. The aftermath could be signs of individuals’ over-stretched resources to cope.

  • How do we support each other as a community, as an organisation, a manager, team leader or an employer?
  • How do we be on the lookout for possible signs of distress or even suicidal behaviour in individuals around us?
  • What do we say?
  • What do we NOT say?
  • What do we do?

This course will focus and equip learners with basic skills (on the ‘hows’) to best respond to individuals identified to be showing signs of distress or even being suicidal.  These skills, though basic, are never to be underestimated in their value - especially in a critical or crisis situation.  Never underestimate what each of us can do to help and we can make a difference to someone.

Learning Outcome

At the end of the session, participants will be able to:

  • Identify risk factors that trigger distress or even suicidal behaviour
  • Explain the myths and facts about suicidal behaviour
  • Identify warning signs – Verbal and non-verbal
  • Take steps to reach out and engage
  • Apply non-judgmental empathetic listening skills to: - reach out and engage - build rapport - help calm distressing emotions - get further help

(This course may be customised to ensure applicability of skills for participants.)
